Children’s literacy is a high priority in the mission of the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System.   As part of the major renovation project at the Fairmount Branch Library, the children’s section received a lot of attention during the design process to ensure that the youngest patrons would have the utmost encouragement. The new interior design incorporates an ‘outer space’ theme and an abundance of colorful finishes as a means of enticing the curiosity of young minds.

Young adults will find plenty of WiFi counter space and public access computer stations to satisfy their need for connectivity, and new group study spaces provide opportunities for teens to collaborate on school projects.

The bones of the building were given a sustainable, green building boost with the introduction of energy efficient heating and cooling systems, new windows that reduce solar heat gain, LED lighting that saves on electrical power usage, and water saving plumbing fixtures.
