As part of a system-wide program to rejuvenate all of the existing branch libraries, the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System commissioned Gant Brunnett Architects with the opportunity to bring new life to the Beltsville Library just north of Washington, DC. The most significant improvements were created in the main collection area where tired, un-inviting open spaces were transformed with an energetic new interior design. The creative design elements invigorate the imaginations of children with a lazy river that guides them to their reading discovery destination; but not before they find themselves negotiating an interactive bridge made just for kids.
Young adults have been provided with spaces devoted to new technology, along with study rooms for after school collaboration with other students. Behind the scenes, the library infrastructure was completely rebuilt to incorporate sustainable, green building strategies including energy efficient heating and cooling, new lighting, and water saving plumbing fixtures.
